South Africa's economic hub hit by winter storms
JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Winters in northern South Africa are usually cold and dry. But heavy rain, sleet and even light snow have fallen this week in the Johannesburg area.
Elizabeth Webster, a South African Weather Service forecaster, said Thursday the rain is unusual, but the cold temperatures are not. She says things should be back to normal Friday.
That's good news for the Salvation Army, which has seen high demand for blankets this week from people living on the streets and other impoverished South Africans in Johannesburg, the country's economic hub. Spokesman Piet Semeno says the Salvation Army is calling on the public to donate blankets to replenish its supplies.

PREPARE FOR A SIGNIFICANT WEATHER SYSTEM: COLD WITH WIDESPREAD, UNSEASONAL RAIN
HEAVY RAINFALL EXPECTED IN SOME PLACES
South Africans should prepare themselves for a significant weather system that is expected to bring a wet and cold
week with widespread, unseasonal rainfall that is likely to be heavy in some places. While snowfalls are expected on
the mountains, at present the main feature of this weather system is the risk of heavy rainfall in some areas.
EXPECTED DEVELOPMENTS
Isolated showers and thundershowers are expected to start developing in the central interior of the country this
afternoon.
Tomorrow and Wednesday 8 June, rainfall is expected to spread to most parts of South Africa, with a risk of heavy
falls of rain (greater than 50mm in 24 hours) in some areas.
Currently, the places most at risk of heavy rainfall tomorrow on Tuesday 7 June are the North-West Province, Free
State and extreme eastern parts of the Northern Cape as well as the northern interior of the Eastern Cape . On
Wednesday 8 June, the risk of heavy rainfall may persist in Free State, Eastern Cape and eastern part of the
Western Cape , while spreading to southern Gauteng.
Significant snowfalls are likely on the mountains of Lesotho, the Drakensberg, and the north-eastern high ground of
the Eastern Cape on Wednesday. Significant drop of maximum temperatures expected over the country as from
tomorrow through to Thursday with a cold and windy conditions in most of the areas but it will be very cold on the
south-eastern high ground from tomorrow until Wednesday.
There is presently uncertainty about the behaviour of this weather system as it exits the country during the week.
