Dawson Camp Billed As Best For Teaching
Dermontti Dawson, a former Pittsburgh Steelers center and Pro Football Hall of Fame finalist, bills it as the best teaching football came in the nation.
Founded in 1983, Dawson’s camp has graduated more than 88,000 athletes going into its 28th season of existence. Before the camp begins, each instructor attends an orientation session to ensure that they are prepared to guide the campers each year.
Those campers are taught at about a 10-1 ratio, which ensures that they receive individual and team instruction on both offense and defense. There will be practice sessions, lectures and in-depth instruction for about six hours each day from June 22-25 at Robert Morris University in Moon Township, Pa.
Campers will be split into age groups. Along with football skills, the campers are taught about teamwork, consideration for others, self-discipline and how to reach their potential in life. Safety is also important, so athletic trainers are on duty at all times.
Some current and former Steelers assist Dawson. Current Steelers committed to the camp include quarterback Charlie Batch, safety Ryan Clark, linebacker James Harrison, nose tackle Chris Hoke, cornerback Anthony Madison, wideout Antwaan Randle El, tight end David Johnson and linebacker Stevenson Sylvester.
Former Steelers in attendance include Steve Avery, John Banaszak, Jerome Bettis, Shane Boyd, Barrett Brooks, Kris Brown, Mark Bruener, Carey Davis, Chris Fuamatu-Ma’afala, Jason Gildon, Jeff Hartings, Former Merril Hoge, Earl Holmes, Jovon Johnson, Dan Kreider, John Kuhn, Carnell Lake, Greg Lloyd, Michael Lorello, Sean Morey, Chukky Okobi, A.Q. Shipley, Anthony Smith, Harrison Smith, Jerame Tuman, Kimo von Oelhoffen, Mike Wagner, Dewayne Washington and Amos Zereoue.
Former Steelers head coach Bill Cowher and former strength and conditioning coach Chet Fuhrman also are assistants at the camp.
