Next up in the Port Hope, Ont., Wednesday night speaker series is Jim Lounsbery on Little Known Garden Gems for the Lands on March 16.

The Spring into the Garden Speaker Series 2011 in Port Hope, Ont., benefits Northumberland Big Sisters Big Brothers. There are four speakers on Wednesday evenings in March. Tickets for the series are only $35 and are limited. Single tickets, if available, will be $15. The lineup:

March 2 – Marjorie Mason on Bulbs For All Seasons

Brighten your garden, patio and home with season long colour using both hardy and tender flowering bulbs. Learn how to plant, design and keep bulbs flowering for years.

Bio: An award-winning gardener as well as popular writer, radio host and lecturer. Marjorie is the owner of Mason House Gardens – a retail plant centre and display garden specializing in perennials, shrubs, bulbs and heather, as well as annuals, tropicals, and an ornamental vegetable garden.

March 16 – Jim Lounsbery on Little Known Garden Gems for the Lands

Get to know wonderful items for today’s smaller urban landscape. The lecture contains some of Jim’s favourite deciduous and evergreen plants that will add colour and texture year round.

Bio: Owner, along with wife Simone, of Vineland Nurseries . Jim has taught Horticulture and Landscape Design at Mohawk College, Niagara College, Humber College, to name a few. Jim is a Certified Arborist.

March 23 – David Tomlinson on The Making of Merlin’s Hollow

Meet one of the two creators (the other is his wife Dierdre) of this unique perennial flower garden – featuring over 2,500 different plants, including many rare ones. In June of each year, the community visits the grounds to learn gardening tips and purchase plants, with all proceeds going to Aurora’s Historical Society.

Bio: Award-winning landscape architect and horticulturist, David’s commitment to ecological preservation has helped to make Aurora a healthy community for generations to come.

March 30 – Frank Kershaw on Great Country Gardens or Rural Paradises

An educated look at the creation of fabulous rural paradise gardens in Ontario, Quebec and New England. Featuring rural gardens, country escapes, weekend getaways, cottage gardens bordering lakes and rivers, island retreats and hobby/equestrian farms with extensive gardens. The owners of these properties have captured the uniqueness of these fabulous sites in developing their gardens and we can learn so much from their efforts.
