Riverfront Playhouse tries out 2-person play
When the entire cast of a play is just two people, the presentation becomes a bit more difficult.
"A play of two people requires a lot more players," said Tim Curtis, director of "Mass Appeal", presented at the riverside Playhouse in Aurora. "They must work well with each other. With only two characters, it is a little harder to keep the action moving. "
The play of two people, "Mass Appeal" is a two-act drama of Bill C.Davis centers on two strong-willed and idealistic priests who find themselves at a crossroads. The play takes place in St. Francis Catholic Church, where Father Tim Farley popular (played by Gary Puckett) promotes "dialogue sermons" with his congregation invisible.
One Sunday morning sermon dialogue is hijacked by Mark Dolson (played by Frank Warpeha), a seminarian passionate, but brash young. Annoyed, but impressed, Farley takes the youth under his wing antagonist.
Each man uses his relationship with the congregation to solve their own personal problems. In addition, each man seeks to force the other to be a good priest.
"Although the story is a drama, there are many moments of humor throughout the show," said Curtis. "In its most basic level, it is a powerful story of two men trying to help better the other. In casting the show, Curtis looked for actors who are versatile and work well together.
