Commerce Bank of Arizona named to Top 200 Community Banks

Commerce Bank of Arizona was recently named to U.S. Banker magazine’s list of the Top 200 Community Banks.

Tucson-based Commerce Bank is ranked 73rd based on a three-year average return on equity. The only Arizona-based institution on the list, it operates seven branches in Tucson, Mesa, Scottsdale, Green Valley and Tubac.

Lawrenceville, Ill.-based HBancorp. ranked first, followed by Guaranty Bancshares of Mount Pleasant, Texas, and Tri-County Financial Group of Mendota, Ill.

This year, banks that earned a three-year return on average equity of at least 7 percent made the list, down from 8 percent last year.

Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio and Virginia are the only states with more than 10 banks each on the list.

The list included publicly traded and owned banks with less than $2 billion in assets as of Dec. 31, according to U.S. Banker. About 1,000 U.S. banks met the criteria qualifying them for the top 200 spots, U.S. Banker data show.
