Australian gardening is easy, Casey couple says

You can still grow plants indigenous Australians, even if you have a small garden.

This is what Australian resident Berwick plant and member of the Society in January Chisholm said.

But again, Chisholm and her husband Ian have a garden on two acres native Australian mainland.

"Many people think that because they have a small space, they can not grow native plants, but there are plants adapted to all sizes,''Chisholm said.

The pair of Berwick turned two acres of paddock into a garden of more than three decades.

Since then, the couple put in native plants and indigenous Australia.

"We wanted to use native plants because it attracts birds, bees and butterflies. We wanted a garden alive, not sterile with roses and hedges.''

The garden has many different types of species such as Silver Princess Eucalyptus gum, Illawarra Flame Tree, lace bark pine and Queensland Hoop.

Despite being a large garden, Ms. Chisholm said he was not too difficult to find.

"We do not mulch around the plants and prune trees, it's a job, but not much work.''

She said she had a lot of information and advice of the Society of Australian plants.

As many of you know, the bees in the world are struggling. Colony Collapse Disorder, predatory beetles and probably a host of other factors that have to do with our lack of care for the earth is slowly destroying the bee population in the world. We have noticed a decrease in the activity of bees in our garden this year and we are extremely concerned about this problem, since many of our plants depend on bees to produce fruit or vegetables. So we were very excited to discover a hive in a log home on our property.Honey is stored in the social beehives in hot weather of the year so the bees can survive in cold weather of the year. Because of the winter in Europe is long and cold, honey bees are much more European (70 - 100 kg per year per hive) that our Australian native bees (only about 1 kg per year per hive). Our native bees are only found in warmer regions of Australia. The hive, we found was the variety Carbonaria Trigona (Australian stingless bees). Tom cut both sides of the log so that the party with the hive was left. Then he screwed wooden blocks on each side to close, leaving their natural entrance open. We had to hive off the property for about three weeks and then return it and put it in its permanent spot in our garden vegie on their return. This was to ensure they would not try to go where they used to be on our property. Tom assembled a small roof over their entry, to keep time for them (the bees pampered ...) and found a nice place for them in our garden vegie under a tangerine tree.
