Backpackers robbed in Childers

A MAN mugged and assaulted two backpackers and a hostel manager in what appears to be a racially motivated two-hour crime rampage.

Bundaberg Criminal Investigation Branch Detective Senior Sergeant Joe Hildred said the series of attacks started when the man and two others followed a 19-year-old British male backpacker as he walked with two friends to the Woolworths supermarket in Childers about 6.30pm on Monday.

It is understood the man called the group “English c**ts” before kicking the young man.

Det Snr Sgt Hildred said during the scuffle, the man stole a mobile phone and $65 from the wallet of the backpacker.

About 7.30pm, a man fitting a similar description attacked a 26-year-old Indian backpacker as he was using the wireless internet point near the Childers Library.

Det Snr Sgt Hildred said the man headbutted the tourist before stealing his laptop.

The rampage came to an end after the 42-year-old manager of the Childers Backpacker Motel, formerly known as the Panda Motel, called police about 8.15pm claiming a man had been yelling insults and racist taunts at the premises.

Childers police Senior Constable Donna Gay said the offender began to swear and wave a piece of steel, before a scuffle ensued and the man allegedly kicked the manager before taking his mobile phone.

Police later arrested a 39-year-old Apple Tree Creek man in relation to the crime spree and took him to the Bundaberg Watchhouse.

The man appeared in Bundaberg Magistrates Court yesterday morning, where he faced three charges of robbery with violence and two charges of obstructing police.

The case was adjourned until August 26 to allow him time to seek legal advice.
