Hoboken's most stylish are starting to look like they fit into the era of black and white films, when actors—like Hoboken's own Sinatra—were seen dressed to the nines in polished, classic styles.

The original penny loafer was made in the 1800s by a bespoke shoe company in London who designed them for the Royal Family.  But the penny loafers Americans think of today, were based off of Norway's "slip-ons" which were designed as a house shoe in the 1930s, and copied by traveling Americans, who by the 1980s, developed the style into mainstream business wear for lawyers and Wall Street workers.

Typically associated with menswear, penny loafers, also known as cigar shoes in their fancier variation, increasingly became popular among women as bare legs and feet with skirts during the 1940s and 1950s were being accepted as an appropriate trend.
