Southington: Town Moves Ahead With Sewer Repairs - Hartford ...
The sewage backups had been occurring because so much stormwater leaks into the pipes during rain storms that their capacity is overwhelmed, forcing sewage back into houses. Homes in the neighborhood have been damaged by backups three times in the past four years, most recently in March.
Town Manager Garry Brumback said that the sewer work approved by the council Monday goes further than the previous work recommended by consultants. Officials said the new plan should prevent future backups.
"This is a belt-and-suspenders approach," Brumback said. "The last thing we can afford is to not be successful. I think that for $184,000, we can put residents' minds at rest."
Despite those assurances, at least one resident said he would prefer that the sewer pipes in the neighborhood be replaced rather than simply lined. Tony Casale said the consultants, at previous meetings with residents, said that replacing the pipes offered the best assurance against backups.
"If there is even a 5 percent chance of sewer backups again, I don't want to take that chance," said Casale, whose home is among those that have had the problem.
Brumback said he would like to see the project completed before winter.
"I want to get this on as fast a track as we can," he said.
Money for the work will come from a sewer reserve fund used for repairs and other urgent sewer needs.
