Mont Blanc Challenge - Day Three Report

Breakfast was continental this morning as our three guides arrived at 8am to inspect the equipment we had brought with us. They had a check list to work through and wanted to thoroughly check that our kit was up to standard..... Thankfully I passed the test (although my lack of a Goretex jacket was questioned but I assured them lightweight jacket was perfectly waterproof).

I collected my only piece of hired equipment (a climbing harness) as others collected boots, crampons, helmet and even poles. We popped into town as a group to collect any provisions required following the inspection. Some compeed, tape (remember this one for later) and my brand new Thermos flask... Have to get a new one every trip... Sorry Sharon another for the collection The journey through the 12km Mont Blanc Tunnel to the start of the Ascent of the Grand Paradiso took an hour. The journey was like the ending scenes to the Italian Job... Terry and I looked at each as each winding bend was followed by a nonchalant 'oops' by Cristian. I started humming 'The self preservation society' but no one picked up the lead... #Ionlytoldyoutoblowthebloodydoorsoff in an East End Cockney accent. Towards the end of this climb I started to feel both heels rubbing.... And yes my compeed had moved and exposed my relatively new boots to my skin. Not my worst set of blisters but not a great start given the six days slog we have in front of us… I now  need to treat both heels tomorrow with compeed AND this time tape them on so they do not move... Thats why we bought the tape (gave myself a good telling off I did). We all assembled outside for a few training workshops in use of ropes and the distances we need to keep given crevasses and the like, crampons, harness and how to carry our axe when putting it up and down on the glacier.... It all feels very real now as I sit outside the hut and look up at our target at around 15,000ft... With evening meal at 7pm we are all up at 4.30am for a 6am start up the mountain...

What to have on- practically nothing! I normally photograph them in just a diaper, naked or wrapped in a blanket. If you have a fabric diaper cover that functions even better.
