National Eisteddfod: Non-Welsh speakers attracted by Maes' wow factor

THE growing number of non-Welsh speakers attending this year’s National Eisteddfod is testament to the success of the event, festival chief executive Elfed Roberts has said.

Mr Roberts was speaking before the pink pavilion was dismantled today on the fields of Wrexham’s Lowe Berse Farm.

He said the number of non-Welsh speakers attending this year was a reflection of an event which must be considered one of the best of its kind in the world.

“We’ve been very happy with attendance figures, especially as we remain in an economic climate where money is scarce and everything seems to cost more,” he said.

“The weather has certainly been a factor, we’ve been here since the third week of May building the Maes and had only a few showers, allowing us to complete the building work.

“The same has been true throughout the week, and when people are happy they complain less and make our job easier.

“Over the past few years we’ve realised that we must offer as many activities and things to see as we can to keep people on the Maes for more than a few hours and lessons have been learnt again this year about what works which we will take with us into the future.”

He added: “We’ve also seen a lot of non-Welsh speakers visiting us this year and even people from England and further afield which is a fantastic thing because we believe that this is a world class event which demonstrates that Wales has its own language and industry and promotes that.

“Hopefully even non-Welsh speakers can recognise and be proud of that, and hopefully a visit to the Eisteddfod can give them the motivation to learn or teach their children about our language and traditions.”

Eisteddfod president Prydwen Owens said: “There’s two things that have struck me this week, the relaxed atmosphere of the festival and the excitement and buzz on the Maes.

“We’ve seen people travel from Cardiff, Aberystwyth, all over Wales.

“We’ve seen people come just for the day and people taking the opportunity to visit the town and other local attractions, there’s been a wow factor at this year’s event, and it has been a very social Eisteddfod.”
