Satellite Watches Tropical Storm Emily Fizzle, Morph And Hope For Comeback

A new animation from the GOES-13 satellite shows the creating and morphing of what was once Tropical Storm Emily into an elongated area of low pressure over the Caribbean Sea.

The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite called GOES-13 provides continuous visible and infrared imagery of the eastern U.S. and Atlantic Ocean basin from its position in space. GOES satellites are operated by NOAA, and the NASA GOES Project located at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. creates images and compiled them into a video of Emily’s life so far.

In an animation of GOES-13 satellite imagery, Emily is observed from August 3 through August 8 and shows Emily forming east of Hispaniola and moving west over the Dominican Republic, Haiti and eastern Cuba. On August 5, a still image from GOES-13 showed what appears to be the center of the low was just north of the eastern tip of Cuba. Higher thunderstorms in the center are casting small shadows on the lower, less powerful thunderstorms around them.

Emily is now a surface trough or elongated area of low pressure. The National Hurricane Center noted that Emily’s remnants contain a large area of cloudiness and thunderstorms extending from eastern Cuba northeastward across the southeastern Bahamas.

There’s a good chance that Emily can make a comeback and get her act together on the weekend as upper-level winds become more favorable. The National Hurricane Center gives Emily a 60% chance of making that comeback over the weekend.

Invest 92L In The Far Eastern Atlantic:

We have a tropical disturbance, designated Invest 92L by the National Hurricane Center, located to the south-southwest of the Cape Verde Islands in the far eastern Atlantic. Analysis this morning showed that this tropical wave probably will not develop anytime soon due to a combination of dry Saharan Air to its north and a quick forward speed which will limit convergence and spin in the lower-levels of the atmosphere. Development, if any, will probably not occur until later this week when 92L is located west of 55 West Longitude near the Lesser Antilles; however, even then, environmental conditions are only marginally favorable and I have my doubts that 92L will ever develop into a tropical cyclone. With that said, I will be monitoring Invest 92L this week and I will keep you all updated.

Tropical Wave Located East Of The Lesser Antilles Near 50 West Longitude:

Given its proximity to the Lesser Antilles, I am keeping an eye on a tropical wave that is located about 600 miles or so to the east of the Lesser Antilles. Analysis using the products from CIMSS indicates that the vorticity (spin in the atmosphere) and low-level convergence is slowly increasing with this tropical wave. Wind shear around this tropical wave is favorable with 5 knots or less of shear indicated. There are a couple of things working against this tropical wave right now: The first is a lack of organized and consistent deep convection and the second is a pretty large amount of dry air located to the north and east of this tropical wave. It should finally be noted that none of the global models forecast development from this tropical wave.

At this point, it is of my opinion that I don’t think we will see tropical development from this tropical wave for at least the next 2 to 3 days. With that said, this system will be monitored this week, especially once it gets into the central and western Caribbean late this week where conditions are more favorable for development.

Other Thoughts:

I want to very strongly emphasize to all of our Crown Weather friends that you may want to take some time this week, while its quiet, and take another look at your hurricane preparedness kits. Make sure you have everything that you may need in the event of a hurricane landfall.
