No end for this music career

The 81-year-old musician still plays almost every day with six or more different bands, gigging and jamming his way through his golden years with no sign of a ritardando or slowing of tempo.

Like some of the instruments he plays — a tenor banjo from the 1930s, a soprano sax from the 1920s and a cornet from the late 1800s — the seasoned musician seems to be getting better with age, his busy schedule providing him with both mental stimulation and emotional well-being.

“With any music group, it becomes like a big family, and we enjoy getting together,” he said, sitting in the music studio in his Santa Rosa home. “We just went to a jazz festival in Olympia, Wash. . . We get together with perfect strangers and play. All of a sudden, you make friends pretty quick.”

An avid hiker and square dancer, Walker credits his English and Dutch ancestry for his continued vitality.

“People see me and say, ‘You look so healthy,” he said. “I think I have good genes.”

A music teacher for 31 years, Walker plays 10 or 11 instruments — including upright bass, drums and violin — but his real expertise lies in the reed instruments, including the clarinet, the saxophone and the flute.

Now that he's retired, Walker plays regularly with the New Horizons Band in Santa Rosa, part of a national organization offering yearly camps and trips; and the Tuesday Night Wind Symphony, a full band associated with the Santa Rosa Junior College.

He has also performed with the Santa Rosa Clarinet Quartet, an educational ensemble that plays in the schools.

“I like the camaraderie, with clarinets getting together,” he said of the quartet.

Over the years, Walker has migrated deep into Dixieland territory, getting together once a month to jam with T.R.A.D. J.A.S.S. (Traditional Ragtime and Dixieland Jazz Appreciation & Strutters Society) at the Last Day Saloon in Santa Rosa's Railroad Square.

As part of that group, he also performs with Beyond Salvation, a four-piece band featuring 15 instruments.

Over in Sonoma, he plays with a professional gig band called the Sonoma Swing Band, a nine-piece ensemble that performs big band music from the 1940s.

And, he never misses a Sunday at the First Congregational Church in Santa Rosa, where he still sings in the choir after serving as choir director for many years.

“Even if I'm working late, I'm always at church,” he said. “If you're a singer, you're using your ears to be on pitch.

The 5 note Minor Pentatonic Blues scale is presented in three positions to provide a framework for learning to create lead / melody lines against a 12 bar Blues progression. (Suppliment Lesson B and C Jam track) 4. Pentatonic scale exercises are presented to improve left hand movement and right hand picking. A Blues arrangement is taught to demonstrate utilizing these ideas to create your own Blues song. 5A. To begin to understand how to build chords down the fingerboard, we will study the major scale and harmonizing two note doublestops on strings 2 and 3. These ideas will be applied to create Blues licks. 5B. Continuing with the previous lesson, we will examine the doublestops on strings 1 and 2. Skipping a string in between, we will also learn how to harmonize strings 1 and 3. These ideas will help clarify how to create fills while moving from chord to chord. 6. To better organize the fingerboard, we will use the major scale to explore the location of three different triad chord inversions up and down the fingerboard. This will clarify the relationship between single notes from the major scale, two note (harmony) doublestops, and three note triad chords. Understanding this information will make finding chords and creating your own arrangements easier. 7. In this lessons we will apply our knowledge of chords to learn an arrangement of the Blues standard Stormy Monday. 8. Taking chord theory further, we will learn how notes from the major scale are added to the basic chord triad to create extended chords like the major 7th, 7th, 6th, Suspended 4nd and Suspended 2th. 9. To learn how to apply our knowledge, we will examine an arrangement of Freight Train. 10. In this lesson, we will learn 11 licks in the style of Robert Johnson and understand how they can be strung together to form a complete 12 bar Blues song. Suppliment Lessons Descriptions: A.
