Continental 10-11 Little League defeats Blue Ridge

Four Continental pitchers tossed a one-hit shutout Tuesday night to narrow the field for the District 1 10-11 Little League All-Star tournament to two with a 15-0 win.

Nathan Duran, Bennett Wojcik, Chance Pierce and Robbie McCarron kept Blue Ridge off the board and eliminated the White Mountains' squad from the tourney.

Continental earned a return match tonight with unbeaten West Flagstaff. Manager Matt Wright's team must beat West Flagstaff tonight and again Thursday night to advance to the state tournament.

"West Flag has beaten us a couple times in a row and they are a very, very good team and are a well-coached and disciplined team with a great pitching staff," Wright said. "We have a battle ahead of us, but I'm feeling confident that we're going to give them a great game."

Blue Ridge, 23-1 losers to West Flagstaff Monday night, had its leadoff hitters reach in the first three innings. But starting pitcher Duran struck out the side in the first, and fanned two more in the second before giving way to Wojcik with runners on the corners. Wojcik walked them full and then got the next hitter on strikes.

By then, the game was essentially decided as Continental scored 10 times in the first inning on just three hits. The team in black and orange plated five more in the bottom of the second. Cleanup hitter Jake Plecas went 3-for-3 with four runs batted in and Duran was 2-for-3 from the No. 9 hole.

Blue Ridge's Adam Henderson reached on an infield hit to start the third inning. But the next three hitters went down on strikes, the first by Wojcik and the next two courtesy of Pierce.

Pierce was lifted with one out and runners at first and second in the fourth. McCarron came on and induced a ground ball to Seth Born at second. Born tagged the runner moving to second base and threw to first for a game-ending double play.

"We had great pitching, and a great effort from kids who don't often get the ball all the time," Wright said. "For them to come in and throw strikes consistently to keep free passes off is a great thing."

West Flagstaff (3-0) defeated Continental 20-14 in last week's Area 1 final, rallying from a 10-6 deficit. Tonight's game is set for 7 p.m. at the main field on Bircle Circle in Page.

Pre-Engineering Excellence at Grandview High School « It Is Academic

At a time when the number of Career and Technical Education (CTE) teachers is declining state- and nationwide, Grandview High School in Aurora, CO continues to succeed in implementing technological concepts into its classrooms.

As a result, many students who have taken courses in the Technology Education and Computer Science department have gone on to design unique senior projects, pass the Certified SolidWorks Associate (CSWA) exam and, in recent graduate Brent Last’s case, gain attention after placing first at a national competition.

Students at GHS have the option of taking a number of courses in the Technology Education and Computer Science department.   In conjunction with the Community College of Aurora, students can take concurrent enrollment (CE) courses within the department, allowing them to earn both high school credit and 2 to 6 community college credits per class.

The Senior Projects capstone, a CE course, encourages students to continue studying in the interest of technology and engineering.  In this extensive, year-long class, seniors develop a project after submitting a proposal and establishing an advisory board, comprised of six members (2 expert advisors from a relating industry and 4 support advisors, including one peer).

The ultimate goal of the class, according to tech teacher Jay Moore, is to “give students an opportunity to go beyond what we are teaching them in the classroom and have them go into an area that they are really interested in.  This class gets them involved with the industry, working on time management skills, and possibly looking at career choices.”

Around the nation and at GHS, educators have implemented SolidWorks® into their curricula to teach fundamental mechanical engineering design skills.  The industry-standard software has evolved into “a big part of our curriculum,” Moore said, and is predominantly used in a number of classes.

The success and quality of Grandview’s tech curricula is due to the dedication that Moore and other instructors have put into their own educational development. The instructors have attended development trainings for the past five years through Career and Technical Training, LLC, the local SolidWorks® reseller. Training workshops include beginner through advanced, Simulation, CAMWorks, ArchiCAD, model building, and SoftPlan.
