Stenehjem was driver, unbelted in fatal crash
New details are coming about the crash that took the life of Senate leader Bob Stenehjem and seriously injured two other passengers.
Alaskan authorities said Stenehjem was driving the vehicle while he and two other passengers were not wearing seat belts.
The accident happened around noon Monday in the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska, where Stenehjem, a Republican from Bismarck, was visiting with family and friends.
A preliminary report of the Department of Public Safety in Alaska, was driving north in a suburb Stenehjem where "he crossed the center line and drove across the southbound lane and off the shoulder to the south in the ditch. The vehicle continued north in the ditch, struck an embankment and rolled several times before coming to rest on the roof in an alley. "
No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
Stenehjem son, Robert Jr. Stenehjem, 34, and grand-son, Daniel Stenehjem, 11, were passengers. Keith Johnson, 34, of Hinckley, Minnesota, a friend of Robert Stenehjem Jr., Was also in the car.
None of the adults wore their seat belts at the time of the accident and all were ejected from the vehicle.
Stenehjem was taken about eight miles from the scene of the accident near Homer to Soldotna Central Peninsula Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Robert Stenehjem Jr. was treated for a broken right wrist, a puncture to his chin, mouth injuries, bruises in his eyes and abrasions all over his body. His son, Daniel, was treated and released. Johnson was transported to Providence Hospital in Anchorage, where he is now in the intensive care unit for adults.
Stella Bagley, deputy sheriff in California, who owns a house in the area, said she has around the crash just after it happened.
She said a passerby with medical training of the army was already there providing care, and the authorities arrived shortly after with four ambulances, a helicopter, a fire engine and six soldiers.
The SUV landed right in front of someone's house - probably on a road with a house every two or three miles, Bagley said. She believes that the visibility has led others to quickly call for help.
"It was a pretty horrifying spectacle," said Bagley."You know people are suffering."
Megan Peters with the Department of Public Safety in Alaska said toxicology testing was still being completed as part of a standard protocol. The report shows that alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the accident.
