Arts festival story has a happy ending

After what the organizers of the second annual Liberty Arts Squared considered a successful arts festival on June 4 around the historic downtown square, it was disappointing to read the article titled “Heat gives Arts Squared a stroke” in the Liberty Tribune on June 8.

While the Liberty Tribune was correct that it was a very warm day and improvements can always be made, the article placed an unfair emphasis on the heat and the placement of food vendors and the beer garden. Despite the high temperatures, there was a positive buzz around the Square all day long. Everyone we talked to enjoyed the festival. We heard numerous arts festival attendees comment that they enjoyed the quality artwork, live music, children’s activities and author readings.

The number of artists grew from last year, and the artwork was of very high quality. The judges of this juried art show were impressed with the quality of artwork offered. Additionally, the artists offered pieces at a variety of price points; there was literally something for everyone’s budget and preference.

Audiences listened to book readings and discussions by local authors and illustrators including Kirsten Borg, Duane Porter, Susan Shank Martha Reppert and Cindy Brouse Kenealy at Crepes on the Square. This was a great way to expose readers to local talent.

The day was made even more festive with live music from local singers Kristen Johnson and Chris Foster, as well as the River Cow Orchestra, the Good Sam Band and the Gary B. Band.

As the pictures accompanying the article showed, children enjoyed live performances of “Itsy Bitsy Spider” performed by Martin City Jr. and testing their skills with musical instruments at the Musical Instrument Petting Zoo presented by the Liberty school district. In the afternoon, children participated in telling the story “Pulling the Turnip,” presented by Joyce Slater, a professional storyteller. Children also made fun and fabulous craft projects at the Martha Lafite Thompson Nature Sanctuary and Odd Ball Kids’ booths.

Liberty Arts Squared would not have been possible without the generous volunteers who organized and helped with the event, giving of their time, energy and resources. These volunteers give of themselves for their love and dedication to the city of Liberty and should be celebrated.
