Sensible Home: Gasoline-powered generator option for outages
Dear Jim: We had two power outages electrical storms recently. It was very embarrassing, so I need to find some type of electrical power. What are my options that are not very expensive to purchase and install? - Mike J.
Dear Mike: The emergency system best and most convenient way to backup a whole house generator fueled by natural gas, propane or diesel. It turns on automatically when electricity goes out, and can power everything in your home. Unfortunately, a cost of thousands of dollars, and you can not install it yourself.
A small gasoline generator is a more affordable option. You can buy these at any store in the center of the house. Different devices connect directly to the output of the generator. Do not try to connect one to the electrical wiring of your home. This risk can not generate enough electricity output, and it can be a hazard to repair electricity.
Another simple and inexpensive option is a portable battery backup. These batteries are 12 volt lead-acid batteries inside them. These batteries are somewhat similar to the battery of your car, but they are designed to be completely discharged without damaging the battery. These documents are available at points of most auto supply retail.
Most battery packs have a 12 volt DC (direct current) output similar to a car cigarette lighter and jumper cables to start a car. Many electrical devices that are designed to run on 12 volt DC power is available in the camping supply points.
The batteries also have a 120 volt outlet in which you can plug appliances standard. They use an inverter that converts 12-volt battery DC to 120 volts AC(AC). The ampere-hour battery determines how much electrical energy it can store.
Although batteries can usually produce a large flow of electric current, 120 volt power is limited by the maximum power of the AC inverter. Most have a maximum power of 400 watts just to check the power of the device before connecting to the battery. If power consumption device is too large, it will trigger a circuit breaker in the pack but not damage it.

Pellet Stove? | Forum Archive
The fire box in my fireplace is shot. I need to rebuild it — not cheap, but acceptable — or put in a wood or pellet insert. I like WBFs and I’ve never thought that wood stoves were an elegant replacement. Actually, I’ve always thought they were a little hippy and a pain in the ass.
But there are positives: The fireplace is huge and the insert could fit flush and not stick into the room, it’s in a large room and I’m sure I could keep the heat lower if that main room was warm, it’s cheaper than rebuilding. This is for a weekend house so it might also be nice to fire it up while waiting for house to warm up.
Pellet stoves seem to have a couple additional positives. Greener, cleaner, etc.
I spent two hours last night watching LOST and googling “pellet stoves”. Should I be spending two hours googling pellet stoves?
