'MasterChef' recap: Top 38 revealed
MasterChef returned last night for the final round of auditions. Present were Gordon Ramsay, Joe Bastianich, Graham Elliot, and the remaining scores of contestants. First up was neural engineer Suzy. As an Indian-American, her penchant for cooking goes against her roots, and her parents are “highly disappointed” with her passion. Luckily, Suzy amazed all three judges with her tandoori sea bass and she received the first apron of the night.
Next up was Max, the youngest ever competitor at 18 years old. Coming from a privileged background, he cooks with only the finest ingredients. He divulged that the other contestants refer to him as the “stuck-up rich kid,” but he simply wants to impress the judges with his craft. Ramsay and Bastianich were indeed impressed, and he walked away with an apron.
A succession of Italian dishes followed, however, none were quite as savory as 38-year-old Giuseppe’s stuffed mussels with marinara sauce. His wife and son were present while the judges evaluated his dish. Ramsay then beckoned his son so that he could present his father with the coveted apron.
Christin, a teacher from Florida, followed with her sweet meatballs. Bastianich loved her dish, while the other judges were less enthusiastic. Despite her pleading, she left sans apron. Disappointment also came for Edgardo. His Dungeness crab only managed to impress Bastianich, who later reproved his fellow judges by saying, “I think you guys made a mistake on that one.”
Better news was in store for Adrien and his achiote tierra y mar, which received three enthusiastic yeses.
Forty-something Joseph served as the next contestant and was easily the most endearing contender of the night. After his wife, Connie, fell gravely ill, he needed to do everything for her, which included cooking. The judges requested to meet Connie, who was humbled by the opportunity to meet Ramsay. While Bastianich gave a no to Joseph’s Swiss alligator, Elliot was a fan. Ramsay then called Connie over to him so that she could award her husband with an apron.
Ben, a travel writer, then made his crispy fish tacos. All three judges thoroughly enjoyed the “ultimate food geek’s” creation and handed him the final apron.
Thirty-eight contestants will now vie for the title of MasterChef. Tomorrow, “the ultimate kitchen battle begins” as the judges will begin narrowing down the field of contestants.

The New Optimism: BRAVE Will Save Pixar | Badass Digest
, notably that this was to be the first Pixar film directed by a woman but she got canned and things apparently changed a lot, but there’s more that intrigues me. This will be the company’s first female-centric film, which feels way overdue. And it’s set in Scotland, a unique place for a film like this. An American film like this anyway.

I don’t think that Pixar is in need of saving, maybe redeeming in your eyes, but lets be honest, they earned themselves some leeway, if they want to release a sequel cash grab, I’m not forced to see it, I’m giving them a pass. Honestly, I can’t think of a Pixar movie you shouldn’t have seen, but if I had to guess, maybe Monsters Inc? Cars 2 is the first one I am passing on personally. I learned to drive a car and secured my license until I was 32, and I’m an L.A. native. After moving back from (4 years of college in Vermont, 4 years of living in NYC), I returned to L.A. determined to bus, subway, and walk. It wasn’t because I hated cars; it’s because I believe all cities should have decent public transportation and I will use that transportation system even if it sucks. For better (Model T hot rods!) and for worse (the destruction of the Red Car system in Downtown L.A., for one), I love the car. I love how it defined suburbia in this city, how it shaped architecture (buildings long and short, buildings shaped like Derby hats), changed how people vacation, etc. I love their design and engineering. Still, I didn’t see Cars in theaters mostly because I didn’t like the character designs at first, but my fella loves the film and he convinced me to watch it on Blu-Ray. I thought it was beautiful – the landscapes shaped like Cadillac fins throughout the years, the history of Route 66, and the joy of momentum. Plus, Paul Newman! I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Sure, it turned out to be a merchandising cash cow and that’s spawned a sequel. I’m disappointed by the plot. Spy cars? Really? I was hoping for a Canonball Run / Great Race across continents as a way to explore the car culture in other countries. I was hoping for Top Gear voice cameos. Ah, well. I suppose I’m the rare chica who digs the franchise.
