Growing Concerns Over Future Of Social Security
- There are growing concerns over the future of Social Security. Even though we pay into the system, there's the fear it won't exist by the time many of us retire. But can you opt out of the program?It turns out thousands of Americans already are not paying into the Social Security System. State employees in seven states are able to opt out, that doesn't include Tennessee.
Teachers in 10 states, including Kentucky, don't have to pay into the system. Members of the clergy can also be exempt.
The reality is that the nation's Social Security system is now paying out more money in benefits than they're taking in. The situation has led many to believe future cuts in benefits are a necessity.
"I would say it's better off to plan like it's not going to be there, and what's the worst case, I am going to have too much money?" said money expert Hank Parrott.
So if we are still paying, but not going to get anything back when we retire, are we better to opt out?
"If someone was disciplined enough to put away the money, they would end up with more money, by investing in their own money, than opposed to it going to the social security administration," Parrott told us.
The problem is 99.9 percent of us cannot opt out of paying because it is against the law. Money expert Dr. Friday told us,
"I don't look to the Government to actually be there for me, I don't think anything our age, should do that," said money expert Dr. Friday.
She predicted if you are in your 30's or 40's that you shouldn't plan on Social Security
"It was designed after the great depression right where people didn't have any money, it was a way to keep people off the food lines, it wasn't designed to be your sole support of retirement," she said.
The word from Washington is cuts to the Social Security program may be inevitable.

Tennessee birth records can be obtained from any local county health department where the birth event occurred. All vital statistics records are held and maintained by the Tennessee Health Department. Birth records were maintained beginning in 1914. A certified copy costs 15.00.
