Rave hosting movies for children on autism spectrum or with disability
Rave Motion Pictures has introduced a new monthly series of movie screenings called "Sensitive Sensory Cinemas," geared to families with children who have special needs—specifically, those who have a disability or are on some stage of the autism spectrum.In an announcement of the series, Jason Wiles, lead manager at Rave, wrote, "We realize that bringing children with autism to the theater can be quite a challenge. Each child reacts differently to the normal conditions of the theater, darkened theaters, and loud sound systems. These shows are shown at a light and sound level which will be more inviting for these families.
"We also realize that the normal standards of theater etiquette of 'please sit and be quiet' can also be challenging. We want to emphasize that during these performances, the lighting will be left on high, the sound will be turned down, and our patrons are free to talk, sing, or move around the theater during the show.
"The purpose of Sensory Sensitive Cinema is to control the environment and provide an atmosphere in which they will feel comfortable and also to allow the parents of the children to not have to worry about the noise their kids are making."
The series began last month and continues at 10 a.m. this Saturday with the new G-rated release "Cars 2." “Sensory Sensitive Cinemas” will continue on the fourth Saturday of every month. The features will always be family friendly, and will be rated either G or PG. "Winnie The Pooh," rated G, is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, July 23.
Admission is $7.50 for adults and $7.25 for children. The concession stand will be open, but those with dietary concerns (gluten-free or casein-free) are welcome to bring their own snacks.
In addition, Rave will also incorporate the “Sensory Sensitive Cinemas” into its Free Family Film Festival Series. On Tuesdays at 10 a.m., they will dedicate one auditorium to show the Free Family Film Festival film as a “Sensory Sensitive Cinema” as well. The next performance will be "Yogi Bear," rated PG, shown on Tuesday, June 28 at 10 a.m. Admission for this screening is free. The Free Family Film Festival will run on Tuesdays through August 8.
