Screening students for heart abnormalities becomes a calling to save young lives

Eric Paredes’ story is not unlike Wes Leonard’s, the Fennville High basketball star who collapsed and died in Michigan last March of sudden cardiac arrest minutes after hitting the game-winning overtime shot.

Paredes, like Leonard, was an otherwise healthy athlete who had an undetected ticking time bomb — a heart abnormality — that triggered his death.

Paredes was 15. He was a hip-hop dancer for Culture Shock Dance Company. He was a football player with his sights set on making the junior varsity squad at Steele Canyon High. He was a wrestler who was expected to move up to varsity.

But his life ended on July 23, 2009, the summer before his sophomore year. Paredes had been home alone when his father found him collapsed on the kitchen floor, a victim of sudden cardiac death.

Eric’s parents, Hector and Rhina, a surgical nurse at Scripps Green Hospital, teamed with Dr. John Rogers, a cardiologist at Scripps, to form the Eric Paredes Save a Life Foundation in an effort to increase awareness about sudden cardiac arrest in youths and to help prevent sudden cardiac death.

Rogers said the pre-participation physical required before high school students can take part in sports is not adequate because it doesn’t include an EKG or an echocardiogram, which are necessary to identify underlying cardiac abnormalities.

Males are four times more likely than females to suffer from SCA, which occurs during exercise more than 60 percent of the time. Sudden cardiac arrest kills hundreds of thousands of people each year. Death is usually the first symptom.

While SCA is less common in children than adults, there is cause for concern for those who play sports. Sudden death most commonly occurs in football or basketball, accounting for two-thirds of sudden death of athletes in the U.S.

According to the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation, roughly 95 percent of all SCA victims in the U.S. — including those who are young and otherwise healthy — are not revived fast enough and end up dying. The immediate application of CPR and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) is necessary to deliver an electric shock to stop the irregular rhythm and allow a normal heartbeat to resume.

On Sunday, Save a Life will hold its sixth free cardiac screening at West Hills High in a joint event with Santana High from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This screening is in conjunction with National Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month, in which 13 organizations nationwide are participating in Screen Across America.
