The Jack Dempsey Cichlid is a popular freshwater fish from Central America. They can show aggression like most cichlids, but given the right tank setup, this aggression should decrease. This fish was given the name “Jack Dempsey” because of the famous boxer from the 1920′s. So that means this cichlid has got to be a beast!
Make sure when you set up an aquarium for the Jack Dempsey cichlid, to provide them with enough swimming room. You will need at least a 55 gallon fish tank to keep one Jack Dempsey. They will get aggressive if they are cramped with a lot of fish in a small aquarium. Make sure to provide them with a cave or a place that they can call home since this is a territorial fish. Once your Jack Dempsey is acclimated to your tank and feel comfortable, they should live for a very long time. Try not to mix with smaller tank mates as the Jack Dempsey may decide to eat them one day! If you have the space for a large aquarium and are looking at cichlids to buy, I suggest the Jack Dempsey because of its beautiful colors! They have great personalities and you will have them for a long time.
