Choose the right credit card for travel

And why not? Credit cards are a convenient, easy way to book flights, make hotel reservations and pay for meals, attractions and souvenirs. But, beware. Using those cards too much can lead to expensive surprises when the trip is over and it’s time to pay the bills.

Manage your holiday spending by starting with a budget—and stick to it. Include expenses that have been prepaid, and estimate others you will make while travelling.  Plan for unexpected costs and avoid debt after your trip. Consider all costs, including fees on currency conversion and credit card use.  One way to avoid some of these may be to use a different credit card.

Canadian consumers can choose among dozens of cards with widely different features and benefits. With so many options, the challenge is to pick one that provides the best combination of value and affordable terms.

The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada takes the chore out of sifting through the information. Among the features on its website is a Credit Card Selector Tool, which lets you compare the features of more than 250 credit cards currently available in Canada.

You can choose based on the type of card you want, how you plan to use it, whether or not you are willing to pay a fee and what rewards and benefits you would like.

The tool will generate a list of financial institutions that issue cards matching your criteria. You can find the annual interest rates charged for purchases and cash advances, as well as minimum payment and annual fees.

You can also compare cards to see which ones offer the features that best suit your needs at the best rates and fees.

FCAC’s Credit Card Selector Tool is available online at fcac.gc.ca .

Extra credit card fees

Other credit card charges can add up during a holiday. You pay interest on cash advances right away, and many companies and providers charge fees for use of third-party ATMs.

Companies also add a foreign conversion markup on top of the cost of currency conversion. If you’re not sure what additional fees may apply when you are traveling, check your credit card agreement or contact your card issuer before you leave home.
