Navy picks up new asylum-seeker boat amid Malaysian Solution drama
The arrival of the eighth boat, carrying 67 people, since an in-principle deal with Malaysia was announced on May 7 is a blow to the government, which is hoping the deal will deter people-smugglers and their clients from attempting the voyage to Australia.
Under the swap proposed deal, 800 asylum-seekers would be sent to Malaysia in exchange for 4000 processed refugees.
The latest arrival takes to 350 the number of asylum-seekers on Christmas Island, including at least 50 children, who will be sent to a third country.
At least four children and a baby are believed to be among the passengers on the latest boat.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard has come under fire this week for failing to finalise her deal with Malaysia, despite releasing a joint statement with Malaysia's Prime Minister Najib Tun Razaks in May announcing the deal.
Speaking this morning on the first anniversary of her taking the prime ministership, Ms Gillard said Australia was in advanced discussions with Kuala Lumpur.
"If you go back to my first speech on the questions of refugees and asylum-seekers I said we need a regional solution," Ms Gillard told ABC Radio.
"We are in advance discussions with Malaysia. Our nation has never seen this innovation before and its a great idea for sending the strongest possible message to people-smugglers."
Last week the parliament passed a motion condemning the so-called Malaysian Solution in both houses, the first time in living memory a government policy has been slammed concurrently in the Senate and House of Representatives.
The deal has also received widespread criticism from sector advocates with prominent refugee lawyers Marion Le and Julian Burnside urging Labor to reopen the mothballed Nauruan detention facility before pursuing the Malaysian deal.
Officials from the United Nation's High Commissioner for Refugees travelled to Malaysia last week for urgent briefings with government authorities as the agency expressed concerns over the deal.
The opposition's immigration spokesman Scott Morrison has also travelled to Kuala Lumpur today to assess the current living conditions of refugees.
Mr Morrison said he would be meeting with human rights groups and members of the Malaysian parliament during his trip.
However he would not confirm if he had locked in meetings with Malaysia's Home Affairs Minister, Hishammuddin Hussein, or any high-level government officials.
