Is the Etios easy on the pocket?
Er the model you currently own since the Innova received a facelift in 2009 with better features. The is more luxurious than when it was first launched with a noticeable improvement. Q- I have been driving a Hyundai Santro since the past 10 years and enjoyed the ownership experience. I now want to buy a saloon. Between the Honda City and the new Toyota Etios, which one do you suggest I go for?

A- Both the Honda City and Toyota Etios are good cars but belong to different segments. The Etios is the car to go for if you have a budget but if you can spend more, the City is overall a better car as it has more features and a luxury feel that is missing in the Etios. However, the Honda will be more expensive to maintain than the Etios.
Q- I plan to buy a used car and am looking for a 2007-model Honda Accord or 2007-08 Suzuki Grand Vitara. I would have considered the Ford Endeavour or Chevrolet Captiva but I’m unsure about the reliability of diesel engines after three to four years. What is your opinion about ageing diesel engines and their maintenance costs?

A- We suggest you go in for a used Honda Accord. A 2007 model will be of the previous generation and, if you scout around, you should be able to pick up one for just under R 10 lakh. The Accord is a proven car with very good reliability. Diesel engines are very sturdy, and hence, can be longer lasting compared to petrol engines. However, diesels require more periodic maintenance and crucial to the longevity is a strict adherence to oil and filter change schedules. With a used diesel, you are never too sure if this has been adhered to and hence, there is an element of risk that you could be saddled with a badly maintained diesel which could prove costly in the long run.

I was at autozone a couple of days ago picking up some Motorcraft oil and a filter. (my buddy works there). He ask why not use the purolator or fram.(because he could give me a better price break). I took a purolator out of the box and showed him the felt seal on the bottom that was only half as thick as the racor/motorcraft(allows unfiltered oil to get by), and how there was visably more filter material on the motorcraft. He said wow I see your point. I took a Fram out of the box and I was suprised, it was the exact same filter as the racor/motorcraft. It looked the same and the numbers stamped on the filter bottom were exactly the same also, (racor internal part number and patent numbers), of couse the manufacture date was diffrent. I check the other 3 frams on the self just to make sure it wasn't a fluke. so it looks like fram reboxes oil filters from a lot of diffrent suppliers .Just fyi... 06 F250 CC SB FX4 Lariat 3.
