First things first: Tim Howard -- the U.S. men's national team goalkeeper who'll play in Tuesday night's Gold Cup at Ford Field -- isn't related to that other Howard (first name Jimmy) who minds the goal for the Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena.
"It's strange to have another goalie by that name," Tim Howard said with a laugh. "I've been asked that before; no relation."
Tim Howard, 32, has been the USA's top goalkeeper since 2007. He hopes to lead the national team to victory today in a friendly against World Cup champion Spain (4:30 p.m., ESPN) before leaving for Detroit later tonight to prepare for Tuesday's group play opener against Canada.
Howard spoke to Jo-Ann Barnas of the Free Press this week. Here are excerpts of the conversation:
Q: You can't have a bigger tune-up to see where the team is than by playing Spain, right?
A:"It's going to be good for a lot of reasons. It's a big game that will lead us into a big tournament. We have a lot we need to accomplish in the next month. Being pitted against Spain is going to be a huge test, but I think mentally it will get us focused and prepared to fight and scrap for the Gold Cup title as well."
Q: So many people have been talking about a U.S.-Mexico final, but you have Canada first. How have you been preparing for them?
A:"We had a really good training camp here in North Carolina. We still have a couple of days to sit down and fine-tune things. Even though Spain's a friendly, we have to focus on that and give it its due respect, and then we can move onto Canada."
Q: Where are you at this point of your career?
A:"I think I'm right where I've always wanted to be. I feel like I'm in a real good place, physically and mentally I feel strong, like I'm definitely on track in terms of all the things I want to accomplish with the national team and the Everton football club (in England).
