Replacement LG units offer odd smells

Because the dehumidifier they bought late in the summer of 2009 hasn't lasted as long as they expected, Joe and Rita Okoniewski were glad to realize that it came with a 5-year warranty.

Joe called the customer service number printed in the owner's manual shortly after he plugged the LG-brand unit in this spring and discovered that it no longer worked. A company representative offered to send a replacement for the $200 appliance, and the Okoniewskis were pleased when the box arrived quickly via Federal Express at their rural Guilderland home.

They were a lot less pleased when they took a closer look at the box and opened it. The replacement was a used unit marked as "refurbished," with a cracked case and other damage that suggested "long use and rough handling," says Joe. "It looked like it had been through a war somewhere."

But worst of all was the strange, bad odor, which Rita describes as "musty."

"We opened it up, and I said 'This smells terrible,'" Joe recalls.

Joe called LG customer service again. The representative apologized for the condition of the replacement, and when he asked if the Okoniewskis would like a new one, Joe gladly accepted the offer.

But he was surprised, once again, when the second replacement arrived. It, too, was marked "refurbished" and came with it's own distinctive odd smell.

"I think there may have been a miscommunication about the definition of 'new,'" Joe told me. "He asked me 'Do you want a new one?' I said, 'Yes, I want a new one.'"

Since then, there have been more calls to the customer service number and a couple of conversations with supervisors. Joe has been told that it is LG's policy to provide refurbished units as replacements.

He believes he may now be on the path to a better resolution, thanks to the intervention of a supervisor who agreed to process a refund if the Okoniewskis sent back the original unit, with the operating manual. Joe did that last week, and, when the refund arrives and he finds a proper box, he plans to send back the second replacement dehumidifier, too.

Still, the whole episode surprised the Okoniewskis.

"I consider LG's policy of providing refurbished units for warranty claims as inappropriate, if not unethical," said Joe. "This isn't my idea of fulfilling a warranty."

They also note that a used dehumidifier is particularly undesirable, even if it has been cleaned and patched up.

Both replacements had strange smells that prompted Joe to speculate that they could have been deployed previously in dank, mildewy or smoky locations.
