NBA labor rift concerning - So far in the NBA finals, television numbers have been skyrocketing, as was the case around the league for much of the season. ABC and ESPN had record viewership numbers all season for NBA telecasts.  Some would suggest interest in the league has never been higher.  Which begs the question: Would those eyeballs come back if next season is interrupted by labor strife?  It's one that ABC and ESPN analysts Mark Jackson and Jeff Van Gundy hope they don't see answered.  Both expressed concern Saturday over the direction the league's labor rift may be heading. More talks between the NBA and its players are scheduled to take place in Dallas over the coming days, though both parties -- even while indicating some progress may have been made at a negotiating session in Miami after Game 1 of the finals -- still appear to be bracing for a lockout to commence when the current collective bargaining agreement expires on June 30.   READ MORE Nowitzki in need of offensive help - No one would blame Dirk Nowitzki if he hung a 'Help Wanted' sign in his locker.  It has come to this for the Dallas Mavericks' All-Star forward.  Nowitzki needs some help. And fast.  During the first three games of the NBA Finals, Nowitzki has been shouldering a mighty big load for the Mavericks. The 13-year veteran is averaging 28.3 points per game. He has hit 45.9 percent of his shots and made all 24 of his free-throw attempts.  The problem, and the main reason the Mavericks find themselves in a 2-1 hole against the Miami Heat, is that no one else has stepped up to complement Nowitzki. Linebacker Play: Reading OL Blocks

What we’ll define next is how they read the blockers in front of them to decide how to defend the gap they are assigned. We’ll treat MIKE as a choose-gap player first and explain it from his perspective, since he is over an uncovered guard and can read his blocks easier than WILL can read his guard.

As we said in the last article, OL give the most desirable reads, 6’3 300lb linemen can rarely trick you about where they’re current. Short 200lb backs that run 4.5 can.

There are dozens of words I’ve come across in what to call a meticulous type of block or block scheme over the years, but there are only so many directions an OL can go. The staff will drill around 8 different paths the OLman can take:

Base Blocks – OG heads straight ahead.

Easy to read and identify. The MLB can spot this one and attack the blocker from the outside-in, that’s why he plays 30, so he has outside leverage on the split.  He heads into him with his inside shoulder, keeping the outside arm free. It should be easy to set his support properly here. He should expect the ball to come towards him and when it goes to his outer half he pushes off the OG. He has helper to the inside and behind him inside (WLB and the S), so its critical he not let the RB get outside of him.
